A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
