“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”

This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
