Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
