European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
