On Tuesday morning residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" level.

Extremely High Pollution Measurements

Various sections of Delhi registered an pollution measurement above 500, which equals ten times the safe threshold recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15 to 20 times exceeding healthy standards.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, officials had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the dangerous haze that engulfs the capital as winter begins.

Yet earlier this year, the newly elected local leadership approached the supreme court to seek a easing of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a compromise between "tradition and environment".

Legal Verdict and Implementation

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological campaigners, the court agreed to the proposal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited hours throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread disregard of the time restrictions across the capital, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Several recording stations throughout the capital recorded air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to extremely hazardous readings recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Consequences

The widespread use of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.

Persistent Pollution Problem

The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have remained as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Near the festival period, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the peak levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted city.

Health and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to cancer.

The pollution is estimated to be causing ten thousand premature mortalities per year in Delhi.
