The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the option to challenge certain rulings from the official, following the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
